Accredited Petrographers
Listed on the linked pages are petrographers who have participated successfully in the most recent Accreditation Program Exercises organised by the ICCP. Each petrographer has submitted petrographic data for a number of different samples in each exercise, using methods established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 7404-2, 2009; ISO 7404-3, 2009; ISO 7404-5, 2009) or in the case of DOMVR and CBAP based on those standards. In some of the Accreditation exercises additional instructions to those of ISO standard are provided to ensure the unambiguous analysis of the samples. The identity of each sample was not revealed to the petrographer and each sample was assigned a unique identifier known only to the Organizer of that scheme.
The statistical appraisal techniques adopted by the ICCP Accreditation Sub-Committee have been summarised by Cook et al. (1997) and are based on robust statistics (see statistical evaluation in detail). Petrographic data for each petrographer are compared against the group means and standard deviations for each coal from each exercise. Two parameters are calculated: the average unsigned multiple of the standard deviation or AUMSD and the average signed multiple of the standard deviation or ASMSD. A statistical measure of a petrographer’s accuracy (AUMSD) and bias (ASMSD) in each exercise is then possible. Results from these tests indicate that the petrographic data submitted by these petrographers lie within the acceptable limits of the measurement techniques used and, on this basis, successful petrographers have been awarded Accreditation status. In addition, these data assist petrographers, first, to self-appraise methods practised in their laboratories and, second, to assist petrographers in problem areas, if these exist, for example, conforming to international best practice.
For DOMVR, AUMSD and ASMSD are calculated for the group of samples used. For SCAP, AUMSD and ASMSD are calculated separately for vitrinite reflectance and vitrinite content (mineral free). For blends accreditation, AUMSD and ASMSD values are calculated across a range of variables that depends on the number of blend components and averaged across these variable for the two samples used.
Accredited petrographers are encouraged to advertise their accreditation status. They must, however, include their accreditation certificate number and certificate expiry date on all official petrographic reports to clients. Please note that ICCP accreditation status applies only to the named petrographer and does not apply to the laboratory. With CBAP and DOMVR, listing relates to overall performance. With SCAP, it is possible that all analysts listed below are accredited for both petrographic methods.
This site will be updated regularly as results from on-going ICCP exercises are assessed and new petrographers achieve Accreditation. The 2006 Exercises are in progress and the results from these exercises are now available for the SCAP and DOMVR programs.
